A butcher, yes that was my trade

도살자, 그래 이게 내 직업이야

But the king's shilling is now my fee

지금은 급료를 받고 국왕의 병사가 되었지

A butcher I may as well have stayed

그냥 가만히 있었으면 좋았을 것을

For the slaughter that I see

학살 현장을 보고 나니 말이야

And the preacher in his pulpit

그리고 교단위에 선 목사는

Sermon: "Go and fight, do what is right"

말했지, "가서 싸워라, 정의가 무엇인지 보여줘"

But he don't have to hear these guns

그렇지만 총소리가 어떤지도 모를 거야

And I'll bet he sleeps at night

장담컨대 밤에는 푹 자겠지

그리고 나는

And I can't stop shaking

떨림이 멈추질 않아

손이 떨리는 게 멈추질 않아

총의 흔들림이 멈추질 않아

마음의 전율이 멈추질 않아

집에 가고 싶어

And I have seen a friend of mine

그리고 나는 내 친구를 보았지

Hang on the wire like some rag toy

철조망에 헝겊 인형처럼 매달린 채

Then in the heat the flies come down

열기 속에 파리떼가 내려와

And cover up the boy

온몸을 뒤덮었어

And the flies come down in Gommecourt

그리고 파리떼가 향한 곳은 곰쿠르,

Thiepval, Mametz Wood, and French Verdun

티에프발, 마메츠숲, 그리고 프랑스 베르됭

If the preacher he could see those flies

만일 목사가 파리떼를 보았다면

Wouldn't preach for the sound of guns
